Drivers of Jeep Grand Cherokees are wondering why they're being turned away at Octopus Car Washes in Albuquerque. The company claims the Grand Cherokees are unsafe after a fatal accident at one of its locations in January. Octopus Car Wash officials wouldn't speak on camera pending the investigation, but have posted a statement on their website and at all Albuquerque locations saying it can "no longer wash the Jeep Grand Cherokee regardless of model year" since Daimler Chrysler refuses to recall or "accept any responsibility" for accidents with the vehicle. Daimler Chryslers corporate officials have said there is no issue with the Grand Cherokee. Local investigators are looking into whether the accident was caused by sudden unintended acceleration, the same problem plaguing Toyotas. According to the police report, the car wash employee driving the jeep says it was in "neutral gear" going through the wash then when he put the jeep "in drive from neutral, the vehicle accelerated very fast. The driver swerved to avoid another car, but instead hit 30-year-old Floridalia Astorga, killing her.

A friend has a 2003 toyota 6 cylinder and it routinely accelerates on it's own. As if the computer does not like to go slow. We're experienced drivers. The car will accelerate from stop lights if we just drive away at normal speeds as if it doesn't like low speeds, and will upshift hard. I know computers control the acceleration and transmission in this car. Drive-by-wire systems are dangerous. I do not like computers driving my car. Electronic timing is one thing, computer driving is another.
